What to choose first in my kitchen project, flooring or cabinets?

A frequent question asked by our customers at Yamini is:

Should I choose my kitchen finish first or my floor first?

If you are going to do your kitchen with neutral colors such as nude, beige, gray or white,

choose your floor first. But if you are going to choose a pop of color like red, green or blue definitely

choose your cabinets first. This way you can take samples back and forth and match with the right floor.

Renovating your kitchen or making it from scratch will always be an exciting project but at the same time full of challenges. Many of our clients ask what should be installed first, we want to give you some tips based on experience. 
Here are a few things YAMINI recommends you think about before deciding whether cabinets or flooring goes first.
Most of the project managers decide to put down the floor first. It’s a more straightforward start. It gives you a clean playing field. It’s safer to floor under everything. 
Starting off right goes a long way to make a kitchen remodel successful.
Besides having a clean start, another big reason to put down floors first is longevity.
 Think of the future. You’ll run into more remodeling issues down the road if you put in the cabinets first. What if you need to change out appliances or you decide to do additional remodeling down the road? Installing the floor before the cabinets makes for clearer sailing now and into the future.

Avoid Potential Damage to Floors

One of the big arguments in the cabinets first camp is the possibility of damage to

 floors as heavy countertops, paint drips, and appliance installation increase the risks. 

We recommend these:

• Work from top to bottom so the ceiling is painted before the cabinets or flooring go so overhead work doesn’t threaten what’s below.

• Save finishes until the end. That way you won’t have to do it twice if something goes amiss in the meantime.

• Protect, protect, protect! Cover the floors until work is complete. Put down cardboard when it’s time for appliances to come in.
